TDS is that portion of solids in water that can pass through a 2 micron filter. The more minerals dissolved into the water the higher the total dissolved solids.
Waters with high dissolved solids are generally of inferior palatability. In drinking water a limit of 500 mg/L is desirable. Total HardnessIn conformity with current practice, total hardness is defined as the sum of the calcium and magnesium concentrations, both expressed as calcium carbonate, in milligrams per liter. Often it is desirable to know hardness of source waters prior to treatment, or to determine if treatment is desired, and finished water after treatment (water softener) to determine treatment efficiency.
